Introduction to an OU Cheerleader

Hello, my name is Christina Schutz and I am currently a junior at the University of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Health and Exercise Science with the hopes of going to PA school after graduation. One of my short term goals is to get a job this semester that is dealing with the medical field in order to increase my number of hours of experience because I will be applying to PA school this summer. I am looking forward to this semester even though I know it will be a hard one because I am taking O-Chem and Genetics. However, I am excited to learn about these subjects. I am a cheerleader here at the University of Oklahoma on the all-girl team. I mention this because I spend a lot of my time at cheer practice as well as cheering at events such as football, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, and others. Over Christmas break, my team and I stayed in Norman to practice for nationals which took place this past weekend in Orlando, Florida. Although staying in Norman over the break and having practices twice and sometimes three times a day it all payed off when we won the national championship this past weekend. This is the first time in the school history that an OU cheerleading team has won the title. I guess that is something that is very important to me that happened recently.

Other than that, I am the youngest child, I have and older sister and an older brother. I am from Lawton, Oklahoma, but I was originally born in Greeley, Colorado. I really enjoy snow skiing and actually used to race competitively when I was growing up. My favorite food is spaghetti, if I could eat one food for the rest of my life it would most definitely be spaghetti. I have three dogs at home that live with my parents. One of my dogs is actually a puppy and was a Christmas surprise for my dad this year. He names her Riley after Lincoln Riley OU's football coach and she is a yellow lab. Also, my sister has a dog and he is always at my parents house with our other dogs. His name is Hudson and he is a big golden retriever. I am looking forward to a great semester!

  1. Oh wow, congratulations on the championship, Christina! What a great achievement! There is nothing better than when lots and lots and lots of hard work leads to recognition like that. What a wonderful college memory you will get to keep forever!

And Riley and Hudson are both so adorable! Maybe they will make some appearances in your stories this semester. You could even do a Storybook project about dogs: there are dog stories and legends from all around the world. There's a very cool Wikipedia category: Mythological Dogs ... It's so fun to think about how much little Riley is going to grow up this semester!

  2. Wow, that's just... wow. Congrats on the national championship win, Christina! It sounds like you're great at it (along with the rest of the team), and definitely invested in exercise! As someone who exercises far less than I should, I definitely find all of it - both the cheerleading and your career path - incredible. I wish you the best with the classes this semester, and I hope it's not too stressful!

  3. Hi Christina! Wow, congrats on the national championship win!! That is an amazing accomplishment and you guys are breaking records! That takes a lot of dedication, so props to you. I am also in the genetics class this semester, so I guess we have two classes together! :)

Oh my goodness, Riley is TOO CUTE. I bet your dad was overjoyed with that gift.

Good luck with all your classes this semester, as well as getting into PA school in the future!

  4. Hi Christina! It is awesome that you want to go to PA school. I recently was accepted to medical school so I know exactly what you are going through! Genetics and O Chem are hard but you can definitely do it if you commit yourself to studying all the time. I am a scribe in the ER and I chart for doctors and its a great job because you can count your hours as shadowing too. So that might be something to look into- I work for a company called ScribeAmerica. Anyways, good luck this semester!!

  5. Hey Christina! That's so cool that you are a cheerleader at the University of Oklahoma cheerleading team. You might know my friend Austin as he moonlights as a mascot for OU Spirit. Austin told me that the UCA Nationals takes place at Walt Disney World. That's so awesome! I heard that they rent out the park for one night, it must be a blast not waiting at any lines. Congratulations again on winning the national championship.

  6. Hi Christina! First off, I wanted to wish you luck with finding a job this year to get those medical experience hours up! I've been working as a scribe in OKC to help my hours. It's a great job if you want more experience, but the pay isn't exactly stellar. Also, good luck in O.Chem and Genetics. I was in the same boat last year, and it was not an easy semester for me, but I hope you do well! Congratulations on the championship! It's awesome you got to be a part of something like that, and you ladies definitely deserved it. Hope you have a good semester!

  7. Hey Christina! I know I've said it a million times before but congrats on the natty! Watching you guys win that was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and I couldn't have been more proud of you! I see you so much at spirit events that it's good to read something about you outside of that! I've kind have always wanted to be an HES major but it was way too much science for me! Also, I'm obsessed with all dogs and yours are so cute! I miss mine all the time and I bet you're really missing that puppy since it's brand new! I look forward to reading all of your posts this semester!

  9. Hey Christina!
That is so awesome that you all were able to win nationals! That trophy probably made all the long days of practice worth it at the end of the day. I think it is great that you are planning to apply to PA school. I heard that is a super competitive field, but if you are dedicated to it then I am sure you will be able to get in! It is such a rewarding career, too. I wish you the best of luck for your future and I look forward to reading your stories in the coming weeks!

  10. Hey Christina!

Congratulations on this big win! Who said hard work doesn't pay off! Its really exciting and probably nerve wrecking that you are applying for PA school so soon! And I agree, getting some medical hands on experience is a great way to figure out if the field is a right fit for you! Also, your dogs are adorable and make me want to get for myself!

  11. Christina,

Congratulations on your victory! Its always great to hear about OU succeeding in all areas. I also really like to ski... haven't been in a while, and I'm certainly not competitive, but I really enjoy it and miss it. Also, what adorable dogs you have! Hudson's face gave me a good chuckle, and Riley just looks really pensive... not a normal state of being for a puppy!

  12. Your life sounds so exciting! My younger sister did competitive cheer (before she got injured and had to quit) so I kind of understand that world a little. It really does take a lot of practice! I think it is great that you are a part of the team that has helped bring a brand new title to the University of Oklahoma. Way to go! Also, that puppy is just too cute.

  13. Hi Christina! Congratulations on the national championship! You must be really good at time management to balance cheer practice, games, and your degree! I had a rough time even with Gen Chem, so it’s impressive that you are taking O-Chem and Genetics, plus extracurriculars and potentially a job. I hope it’s all going well for you! Also, your dogs are adorable, thanks for sharing pics!

  14. Hi Christina, I am also taking Organic Chemistry and Genetics. I hope you've had some luck finding a medical job this semester, I know it's really competitive in this area. Your dogs are precious, I love Hudson's grin! One of the best stress relievers is playing and petting puppies. I love when they have puppies to play with on the South Oval.

  15. Hey Christina! It is great to get the chance to meet you! CONGRATS on the championship!! I actually did not that won the competition. How long have you been cheering for? I know that I tried it as a child, but I only cheered for 2 years. Also, good luck on your classes. I know how hard that can be.
