Feedback Strategies

Image
Feedback can definitely be a complicated topic to deal with especially when giving feedback to someone who you do not know and who does not know you. I feel like different feedback styles honestly depend on the personality of the student giving the feedback. I do feel like praise is very important in most situations but is not vital when giving feedback. Yes, it makes you feel good, but if whatever you did is not good then you do not deserve the praise.  One of the articles that I read was Be a Mirror . In this article, I learned that I should take myself out of giving someone else feedback which is kind of obvious when you think about it, but I constantly find myself writing "I think" and so on when giving feedback. This is important to do because when you give feedback you should focus strictly on the person you are giving it to an not yourself. This will not only help you but will also help them the constructive feedback. This may be a difficult thing to do but it is wor

Topic Research: Animals of the Great Plains

Image
I have decided to focus more on animals of the Great Plains. I am thinking I may want to write about stories with conflicts between different animals and relate it all together in the end. This is just a thought though, I may end up doing and liking something else better! One story in this unit that gave me inspiration to write a story similar was Coyote and Snake . In this story the coyote is walking on a path and almost steps on the snake. The snake politely asks the coyote to go around him, however, the coyote does not like this and refuses to go around the snake. The snake warns him that if he steps on him the snake will bite him. The coyote steps on the snake and the snake bites him but nothing happens instantly. The coyote keep walking and when drinking from a creek looks into his reflection and looks rather fat and then became very sleepy. He fell asleep and did not ever wake up. I think the story line of this story would be very useful in future stories. Another story I am

Week Three Story: The Dog with a Spot

Image
Way back when, there was a man who lived at the top of a hill in the town of Jamberry. The man, whose name was James, lived in a huge house with a lot of servants and helpers around the house. One day he called that all dogs that were under the age of 2 were to come to his door step and would now be taken care of by him. The dogs were taken in by James and treated very nicely, they were bathed, groomed, walked, fed, and so on. Each year, the dogs would be presented to the man and he would either keep them or let them go back out into the town. It was time for the dogs to be shown to James and there was one day that was different than all of the rest of the dogs and it was very nervous that the man would not like it and it would be abandoned back into the town. This dogs name was spot based on the fact that he had a big spot over his eye. When it came to the day in which Spot was presented to James, Spot was so nervous. Spot entered the room and instantly became loved by the man and eve

Reading Notes: Bible Women, Part B

Image
Esther 1 :King James Bible (1611): Esther 2 I would like to focus on the specific part of the story of Esther in which Esther goes to the king just as the other girls did. However, this experience is different for Esther because she immediately wins favor of everyone who sees her and people are fascinated by Esther. She was taken to King Xerxes who was very attracted to Esther more than any other woman he had seen. King Xerxes crowned Esther queen instead of Vashti and through a big banquet for this occasion and declared a holiday. Esther To me, Esther portrays a sense strong willed and independency throughout all of the stories about her. After looking at the pictures of her online as well I think that she was a very strong willed woman and I think it would be easy to base stories off of a woman like her.  Key points Esther was taken into the palace and put under the watch of Hegai A lot of other girls were also taken into the palace because of the kings orders The girls

Rebekah : King James Bible (1611): Genesis 24 and Genesis 25 This story is from the bible so it takes a little more time to comprehend exactly what is going on. I liked the story because of the history behind it. I am going to focus on the character Rebekah. Rebekah Born to Bethuel Son of Milcah wife of Nahor (Abraham's brother) she worked hard and drew water for the camels encounters a man with earrings and bracelets who claims to be Abrahams's servant This story was actually kind of hard for me to understand so I ended up googling and found some good information from Bible Gateway.  The name Rebekah actaully means "animal connection" which makes a lot of sense because in the reading she was always caring for the animals and getting them water. Chapter 24 of Genesis is actually referring to the way in which Isaac found his wife who happens to be Rebekah. The marriage and love between Isaac and Rebekah is seen through many stories in the bible. I would l

Feedback Thoughts

Image
When it comes to feedback, I really like to hear what other people think about my work as well as what I can fix to make my work better. I enjoy reading what other people have to say and if they like or dislike what I have to say. I feel like I also learn a lot from reading feedback whether the feedback is coming from a peer or a teacher. After reading through some of the articles about feedback there were two of them that really caught my attention. The first one that caught my attention was The Psychology of Comparison and How to Stop.  I feel like it is very human to compare yourself to other people, your work to other people, and so on. I often find myself comparing things I do to other people and I would say it is not a healthy thing to do especially if you get caught up in comparing everything in your life. The post had a bunch of helpful things as to what to do when stopping comparing yourself to others. My favorite thing it says is to "be a racehorse" because racehors

Topic Brainstorm

Image
South African Folktales This topic caught my attention because I had no prior knowledge about South African or furthermore South African Folktales. Some of the stories that caught my attention in this unit were stories about how the hunter and gatherers back in the day survived and persevered through the hard times. I also really enjoy stories about animals and many of these stories included animals. Medved: The Bear Officer This is a past story book that I spent a lot of time visiting and reading all about. This story caught my eye because I really like animals and feel like writing about an animal would be a good topic for my story book. I also have a fascination with bears because I grew up in Colorado. I think it would be interesting to look specifically into bears, where they originated from, where they currently live, and what their lifestyle is like across the nation. Great Plains The Great Plains unit caught my eye because it is something that I am kind of familiar with

Week 2 Story: The Youngest Son

Image
The Youngest Son Once upon a time there was a mother of three sons who was heading into the castle to pick up some essential items and food. The mother asked her sons if they needed anything and two of the sons said things such as toys, balls, and other things that they did not actually need. However, the third and youngest son quietly asked his mother for three roses. His mother was shocked by this request from his son and decided that on her journey to the castle she would find her son the roses that he had asked for. After she had gotten everything she needed from the castle and was heading home, she saw a garden full of roses. She thought to herself, this is perfect, and went over and picked three of the most beautiful roses she had ever seen. As soon as she has picked the roses a basilisk appeared right in front of the mother and demanded that since she took three of the roses from the garden she must give the basilisk something in return. The basilisk demanded that the mother

The Indian Who Wrestled with a Ghost Source: Myth and Legends of the Great Plains by Katharine Berry Judson (1913) This story caught my attention because it is a very supernatural story and ghosts intrigue me. One character that stuck out to me was the old lady/ghost. Here are some of her characteristics: wore a skin dress with long fringe buffalo robe around her waste a necklace with large beads leggings covered with beads a robe over her head The characteristics show that the old lady ghost is from an older time and was probably an indian that lived in the forest. Her actions are very mysterious. Old Lady/Ghost: Native American Chief's Ghost The Three Roses Source: The Key of Gold by Josef Baudis (1922) The plot of this fairytale is one that stuck out to me and I think I could use it in a story in the future. Mother asks daughters what they want from the store One daughter, Mary, wants something so simple: three roses The mother goes to get the

Reading Options

Wow, I must say the Un-textbook has a lot of information and some pretty interesting stories too! I feel like I could click around and look at different articles on that sight for a long time, but I guess it is time to do some work. When clicking around I found myself staying near topics that are familiar to me. The first topic I came across was the Nursery Rhymes Unit . To my surprise, there are way more nursery rhymes than I could have ever imagined. Ones that told stories, paradoxes, riddles, and many more. I feel like I would do more reading in this unit because I am familiar with some aspects of nursery rhymes but I could also learn a lot more about this specific topic. Another reading that I came across that I found very interesting was the Unit: Great Plains and more specifically The Creation part of the unit. I liked this story because it was easy to read and kept me entertained. Also I have learned about the Great Plains before so I would like to learn more about them and the

Time Strategies

Image
After reviewing my schedule and learning more about how the class is structured I have decided to make some modifications to my schedule for this class. On Sunday I will do reading A and B. On Tuesday, I will do the storytelling and blog comments and on Thursday, I will do the project and project feedback. I hope to get ahead from week to week and will probably try and do as much work on Sunday that I can possibly do. The article The Myth of "Too Busy"   presented me with many helpful tips and ideas of how to stay focused this semester and prioritize certain things over other unimportant things such as social media. The article prompted me to start thinking about cutting the unnecessary things out of my life and focus on things that are meaningful and that will help me achieve my goals. Another article that I really enjoyed reading was Increase Your Creative Output with 14 Time Management Tips  by Amanda Oliver. One really important thing that I took from this article that I

Technology Tools and Tips

Image
I will say getting used to another website besides canvas has been wind of hard for me especially switching back and forth, but I'm sure I will get used to it. One thing that I have already found super helpful are the different links and instructions that are given to us in order to explain the more complex technology aspects that I will be dealing with in the course. I would say that I am kind tech savvy but only to a certain extent. I have already learned so much more about technology and blogging than I knew before I started this course. One thing that I found super helpful to learn about was how to make words into a link without putting the whole address in the blog/paper. I think that this is a skill that I will use beyond this class and will be very helpful in my academic career. I am looking forward to all of the other things I will learn in this class because it is only week one! Technology Worm by Mira

Assignment Impressions

Image
At first when looking at the structure of this class I was very nervous because it seemed like a lot of work and blogging was something that I was not very familiar with. However, the first week has been pretty easy besides figuring some minor things with the blog. One thing that I already really like about the assignments is that there is a lot of space for your imagination to work and to write about things that you enjoy. This has really kept me intrigued in the class. Also, I will most likely participate in several of the extra credit opportunities. One extra credit opportunity that is catching my eye dealing with the Growth Mindset and Heart. I am still a little confused on the storybook in which I will make eventually. I guess it seems to me like it would be very complicated to make but the directions so far have been spot on for simplifying everything.                                                A teaching blog by Stephanie Van Horn

Growth Mindset

Image
Before watching the videos, I had not heard of Carol Dweck or the Growth Mindset before. However, after watching all three of the videos the second one really stood out to me because I hear something similar to what Carol Dweck was saying on a daily basis. My cheer coach always tells us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable which is similar to what is said in the video. Carol says to make challenge the new comfort zone in meaning that you should never really be satisfied with yourself and you should always continue to push yourself to learn more, do more, etc. This is very true in cheerleading and my coach never stops pushing us to be the best that we can be. Once we master a skill or start to become good at something she introduces us to a harder skill that we have to work even harder to accomplish. I also think that this is something to live your life by everyday. For me sometimes I get into the habit of just going to class, doing my homework, and studying for my tests without

Introduction to an OU Cheerleader

Image
Hello, my name is Christina Schutz and I am currently a junior at the University of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Health and Exercise Science with the hopes of going to PA school after graduation. One of my short term goals is to get a job this semester that is dealing with the medical field in order to increase my number of hours of experience because I will be applying to PA school this summer. I am looking forward to this semester even though I know it will be a hard one because I am taking O-Chem and Genetics. However, I am excited to learn about these subjects. I am a cheerleader here at the University of Oklahoma on the all-girl team. I mention this because I spend a lot of my time at cheer practice as well as cheering at events such as football, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, and others. Over Christmas break, my team and I stayed in Norman to practice for nationals which took place this past weekend in Orlando, Florida. Although staying in Norman over the break and having prac

Storybook Favorites

Image
After browsing through several storybooks and learning more about storybooks and what they consist of, there are three that really caught my eye. The first one that caught my eye is called Ghost stories of OU . This storybook caught my attention because it was about OU and the ghost stories that are affiliated with some of the buildings on the campus. I have heard about some of these stories before but did not know all of the details. The introduction did a very good job of providing background information on the stories as well as made me want to continue to browse the website. Overall, I thought the design was really good. It was a simple design with tabs at the top which made it easy to navigate. A photo outside of Cate Center, where a boy was decapitated in 1986 in a dumbwaiter accident. Favorite Place

Image
One of my favorite places is Cabo San Lucas. As a child, I traveled there every year with my family and it is a place full of great memories for me. There are many things that my family and I do while we are in Cabo San Lucas including scuba diving, kayaking, site seeing, and exploring the town. Also, there are some really great places to eat around the town that have out of this world sea food. I love going to Cabo because I really enjoy spending time on the beach and in the ocean. Playing in the waves of the ocean is one of my favorite things to do especially when surrounded by my family and friends. Also there is plenty of time to lay on the beach and relax when my family and I go to Cabo which is always a good thing. The Famous Cabo San Lucas Arch
